Sarika was born 3rd June, 1962 into a Maharashtrian family in New Delhi., and became an acclaimed National Award winning actress soon.
Her child name was Suraj. She was one of the 80s top glamour girls, with supermodel good looks and a body to match.
She started working in movies as a child and has been credited as Baby Suraj. She was mostly cast in negative roles as she didn’t fit into the traditional roles with her looks. She appeared in many children's movies as well as B grade movies . She moved to better films with Rajshri Productions Geet Gaata Chal with Sachin, with whom she starred in many films and is known to have a brief affair as well.
In her acting career, Sarika was often cast as the vamp Vidhaata or 'westernized' girl in films from 1980's. She gave up her career after marriage with Kamal Hassan during the peak of her career.
While she was married to Kamal Hasan she worked as a costume designer, winning the National Film Award for Best Costume Design for the movie Hey Ram (2000). Her outstanding performance in Parzania in which she plays the role of a Zoroastrian woman who loses her child during the 2002 riots of India, fetched her the National Film Award for Best Actress.
She also stars as Sheetal Thadani in the movie Bheja Fry (2007).
She was involved with the director Sachin and later with actor/ model Deepak Parasher. Later she married renowned South film actor Kamal Hassan. They have two daughters Akshara Haasan and Shruti Haasan. The couple separated in 2002 and applied for divorce (in what is reported to have been a bitter separation instigated by Haasan's alleged extramarital affair with South superstar Simran. However Kamal's relationship with Simran was also shortlived). Thier daughter Shruti Haasan, who has recently made her debut in movies.
The Bollywood most talented actress also starred as Sheetal Thadani in the Bollywood film Bheja Fry which was released in 2006. Sarika on the other hand also had a small but important role to play in Manorama Six Feet Under. See was last seen in “Shoebite” which got released last year where she was paired up opposite the most honourable Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan.
