Exquisite KAJOL MUKHERJEE's biography


    Kajol is one of the most versatile Indian actresses, who has made it to the top through her hard work and sincerity. Extremely talented, her performance has always been appreciated by the Indian folks.

    Kajol Mukherjee or simply Kajol was born on the 5th August,1975 in Mumbai.

    Kajol comes from a family that is actively involved in Indian cinema. Her mother Tanuja, aunt Nutan, cousins Rani Mukherjee, Sharbani Mukherjee and Mohnish Behl all are great actors. Her paternal grandfather named Sashadhar Mukherjee was a film director as well as producer. Kajol's younger sister Tanisha Mukherjee is also an actress.

    It can be said about Kajol that, acting is in their blood. Her mother was a Marathi and father was a Bengali, therefore she is of Bengali-Marathi descent. She got married to Bollywood actor Ajay Devgan on February 24, 1999.

    She left her studies, while she was in school. Her career started when she was just seventeen.


    Her first movie was Bekhudi that was released in 1992, did not fare well at the box office, her performance was appreciated. However, it definitely laid the foundation for her career and Kajol was offered a couple of films, many of which were a grand success in the box office.


    Her first commercial success was ‘Baazigar’ opposite Shahrukh Khan released in 1993. After ‘Bazzigar’ Kajol was flooded with offers from the best of banners and directors.

    Her movie Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge gained immense popularity. It is shown in some of the theaters even today.


    Kajol’s first Filmfare nomination came with Yash Raj Films’ ‘Yeh Dillagi’, a romantic drama opposite Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan. However she won her first Best Actress Filmfare Award for ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ directed by Aditya Chopra.

    Kajol shares a fabulous on screen chemistry with Shahrukh Khan, the king of Bollywood. Kajol has worked in many films with Shahrukh Khan, which also brought her plenty of awards. her blockbuster movies include Baazigar (1993), Karan Arjun (1995), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) and recently released My Naam is Khan .

    Kajol became the first female actor to receive Filmfare Best Villain Award for ‘Gupt: the Hidden Truth’.

    She also won Filmfare Awards (South) Best Actress award for her first and only Tamil film ‘Minsaara Kanavu’.


    Kajol continued her journey of success with superhits like ‘Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya’ opposite Salman Khan, ‘Dushman’ opposite Sanjay Dutt and ‘Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha’ with Ajay Devgan. However she reached the pinnacle of her career with Karan Johar's ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ opposite Shahrukh Khan. Karan’s directorial debut ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ did phenomenally well in Indian as well as overseas markets and also won her another Filmfare Best Actress Award.

    She was highly commended for her brilliant performances in ‘Dil Kya Kare’, ‘Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain’ and ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’.

    Kajol chose to take a break from bollywood with the birth of her first child, named Nyasa in 2003.


    Kajol made a comeback in 2006 when she appeared in Kunal Kohli’s ‘Fanaa’ opposite Aamir Khan. ‘Fanaa’ became a huge success at the box office and earned her fourth Filmfare Best Actress Award. Her performance in husband Ajay Devgan’s directorial debut ‘U, Me Aur Hum’ got her another Filmfare nomination.

    Kajol was recently seen in Karan Johar’s ‘My Naam is Khan ‘opposite Shahrukh Khan. The movie is doing great business in India as well as overseas.

    In 2005, she appeared on the TV show Kaun Banega Crorepati (the Indian version of Who wants to be a millionaire?) hosted by Amitabh Bachchan. She was paired with her husband Ajay Devgan. They won 1 crore (10 million) rupees and donated this to a cancer hospital in Chennai. She has also appeared on Indian Idol, seasons one and two, as a guest judge.

    She appeared on Karan Johar's talk show Koffee with Karan with Shahrukh Khan on the first episode


    Apart from being goodwill ambassador and patron of the Britain-based Loomba Trust - a charity devoted to educating widows' children, particularly in India, Kajol also works with an NGO called Shiksha.

    She is a recipient of the Karamveer Puraskar award (26 November 2008), which recognises individuals who have been pivotal in leading change beyond their business by being committed to social issues.
